Day 01 Cusco (Cusco is a 3,300 meters / 10,824 feet above sea level)  We will pick you up at your hotel for a early morning excursion to the Huacarpay Lakes.  The lakes are 50 minutes from Cusco by bus. The possibilities include Puna Teal, Andean Lapwing, Wren-like Rushbird, Many-colored Rush-tyrant, Puna Ibis, Cinereous Harrier, the endemic Bearded Mountaineer, Rufous-fronted Canastero, Streak-fronted Thornbird, etc. 

*** Please plan on arriving one day early in Cusco.  We can help make hotel reservations for you.  Be aware that Cusco is 10,800 feet above sea level and to help acclimate drinking plenty of

water or tea.

Ramiro speaks English, Spanish and Quechua and has been working in the rainforest since 1980.  He started birdwatching in 1985.  Ramiro has been guiding tours in the Manu Biosphere Reserve since 1988 and was awarded the Best Naturalist Guide in Manu in 1998 and 2000.  As a birding guide he leads tours to many different areas of Peru such as Manu Biosphere Reserve, Cusco, Arequipa, Puno, the Apurimac Valley, Ampay, Paracas, Lima, Marcapomacocha, Santa Eulalia, Lomas de Lachay, the Satipo Road, the Maranon Valley and Iquitos including the White Sand Forest and the Tumbes area.  His Peruvian bird list is over 1420 species. 


Ramiro has also done guiding in Costa Rica where he was working as a resident guide for a Rancho Naturalista and the Tarcoles Lodges.  Both lodges specialize in birdwatching.  Ramrio worked at these lodges for a period of 6 months and has also birded other areas of the country.  He has led tours to Bolivia specifically Madidi National Park, La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz and Noel Kempff National Park.  He has also birded in Chile, Paraguay, Brazil and in Texas during the Birding Festival of Harlingen in 2003.  Ramiro recently birded in the Choco area of Ecuador along with other areas in the country.

Virgilio has a Biology degree and has also been deeply involved with the study of  birds.  His Thesis was done on the diversity and abundance of the Communities of present birds in Amazonia Lodge area in the year 2000.  He has also been involved with State ornithological projects in  Manu National Park in 2008 working in Costa Rica leading birding tours at Rancho Naturalista.

 

Together with his brother Ramiro and their father Santiago, they have made ornithological expeditions to remote areas in the Cusco, Madre de Dios, and Apurimac departments.  Virgilio has been  birding since 1985 in the Cusco area, Manu Biosphere Reserve, Areaquipa, Puno, Lima, and Tumbes areas .  He has seen 1082 species of birds in Peru.   Virgilio has also birded in Bolivia, Paraguay , and Iguazu National park in Brazil.  He recently birded in Ecuador visiting the Choco,  Vellavista, and Papallacta areas.   He speaks English and Spanish and his hobby is the making of wildlife videos as well as photography.  Virgilio is the contributor of many videos and photographs for the Internet Bird Collection and the Hummingbird Photo Gallery.

Abra Malaga presents an opportunity to experience some wonderful alpine birding up to 13,500 feet.   *Note: Parts of the Abra Malaga portion of this extension can be strenuous because of the steepness and altitude.


The magical ruins of Machu Picchu will leave you awe inspired and the area around the ruins offers some excellent birding.

Day 09 Amazonia Lodge - Hotel in Urubamba  Early start from Atalaya by bus.  On the way there are possibilities of finding a flock of tanagers, raptors, etc.  Night at Hotel in Urubamba or

Ollantaytambo.


Day 10 Excursion to Abra Malaga by bus to the sector of Canchayoc  The pass is over 4,200 meters / 13,776 feet over sea level.  The possibilities include the Andean Snipe, Andean Ibis, White-rumped Hawk, Coppery-naped Puffleg, Scaled Metaltail, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Puna Thistletail, Marcapata Spinetail, Paramo Pipit, Rufous Antpitta, White-throated and White-banded Tyrannulets,  Unstreaked Tit-tyrant, Parodi's Hemispingus, Golden-collared Tanager, Plush-capped Finch, Tit-like Dacnis, White-browed Conebill,.Inca Wren, Pale-footed Swallow, etc.  Night at Hotel in Urubamba or Ollantaytambo.


Day 11 Excursion to the polylepis forest at Abra Malaga  On the way we will spend time looking for the White- tufted Sumbeam, Creamy-crested Spinetail, Chesnut-breasted Mountain-finch, Tufted Tit-tyrant, Stripe-headed Antpitta; Puna, Ochre-Naped, White-browed, Plain-capped Ground Tyrants.  In the polylepis forest the possibilities are Lined fronted Canastero, Tawny Tit-spinetail,   White browed Tit-spinetail, Andean Tapaculo, Ash breasted Tit-Tyrant, Giant Conebill, and the Andean Condor.  Night at Hotel in Urubamba or Ollantaytambo.


Day 12 Urubamba - Machupicchu 

Early morning transfer by bus from our hotel in

Urubamba to the train station in Ollantaytambo

(20 minutes).  From Ollantaytambo we take a

train for 1.5 hours to the town of Aguas Calientes.

Upon arriving we will leave our packs in the hotel.


We will next take the bus to the magical Inca city

of Machu Picchu.  After our guided tour of the

ruins and lunch we will start birding the way

down to Aguas Calientes.  The possibilities in-

clude the endemic Green and White Hummingbird,

Silver-backed  Tanager, Golden Naped Tanager,

Sclater's Tyrannulet, Ashy-headed Tyrannulet, the endemic Inca Wren, Pale-legged Warbler, Russet-crowned Warbler.  In the nearby river we might see the Fasciated-tiger Heron, Torrent Duck, White-capped Dipper, Torrent Tyrannulet, etc.  Night at Hotel In Machu Picchu.


Day 13 Machu Picchu - Cusco  After an early breakfast we will start walking in the direction of the Mandor Valley.  The possibilities include Speckle-face Parrot, Streak Xenops, Variable Antshrike, the endemic Masked Fruiteater, Ocellated Piculet, Black-streaked Puffbird, Yellow-whiskered Bush-Tanager, Slaty Tanager, Capped Conebill, etc.  We will then walk back to the town of Aguas Calientes and after the lunch take the train to Cusco.  Night at Hotel in Cusco.  (This hotel is not included in cost of extension.)

A deposit of $200 will be due when reservations are made.The balance  will be paid 30 days before starting the trip. If reservations are made with less than 30 days prior to arrival, then full payment  will be due at the time of booking.


Cancellations and Refunds

Amazonia must be notified about cancellations. days or more notification will result in a $100 handling fee and less than 30 days prior to the trip departure notification will result in the entire deposit being forfeited.

Cusco at Night

Day 02 Cusco to Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge 

We start the day by bus to Manu Biosphere

Reserve.  The ride today can take from 8 to 10

hours depending upon how much birding we do

along the way.  This drive has been described

by many clients as "one of the most spectacular

in all of Peru."  There will be plenty of time built

into today for stopping for picture taking.


Some birding in Huancarani and Paucartambo

areas on the way to Acjanaco pass at 3,900 meters

/ 12,792 feet.  From here we are on the eastern

slope of the Andes.  The habitat of this area is

humid temperate.  The possibilities include, Gray-breasted Mountain Toucan, White collared Jay, Mountain Cacique, Scarlet-bellied and Hooded Mountain Tanager, Grass-green Tanager, etc.  At night a

Swallow-tailed Nightjard and Yungas Pygmy-Owl might be in the Pillahuata area.  After one hour

by bus and we arrive at our comfortable lodge.  Night at Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge at 1,600

meter / 5,248 feet above sea level.


Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge has double-occupancy bungalows, hot water, some electricity, good food, many bird feeders and wonderful walking trails.  You'll have the opportunity to bird right from the dining room, visit the lodges own private Cock-of-the-Rock lek, and enjoy the serenity of a pristine mountain cloud forest.

Day 03 - 04 Two full days at Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge   This area is the Cloud

Forest.  The possibilities include Black and Chestnut Eagle, Andean Guan, Scaly Naped Parrot,

Collared Inca, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Buff-thighed Puffleg, Long-tailed Sylph, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Barred Fruiteater, Barred Becard, Mountain Wren, Solitary Eagle, Crested Quetzal, Golden-headed Quetzal, Masked Trogon, Highland Motmot, Black-streaked Puffbird, Versicolored Barbet, Blue-banded Toucanet, Slaty Gnateater, Yungas Mankin, Saffron-crowned Tanager, and Blue-naped Chlorophonia.  The lodge has a Cock-of-the-Rock leck.  At night it is possible to see the Rufescent Screech Owl and Lire-tailed Nightjard.  Nights at Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge.


Your birding guide will be equipped with digital recordings of most of the areas birds and will be able to call out, with luck, many of the "hard to see" birds.


Day 05 Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge to Amazonia Lodge   Full day birding down the road, with special emphasis on the Pilcopata-Atalaya portion.  The possibilities include Speckle-faced Parrot, Peruvian Piedtail, Chestnut-breasted Wren, Dusky-green Oropendola, Chestnut-backed

Antshrike, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Orange-eared Tanager, White-winged Tanager, Swallow

Tanager, Black-faced Tanager, Black-backed Tody Flycatcher, Lesser Seed-Finch, Golden-bellied Warbler, etc. 


During your travels you will have many opportunities to observe the local people going about their every day life.

Day 06 - 08  Three full days at Amazonia Lodge  

The lodge is situated at the pre-mountain zone

and there it is possible to do birding in many

different habitats like bamboo forest, flood

plain area, hill forest, swamp, etc just walking

short distances.  It is not necessary to take a

boat or car. 

The Lodge also has a porch with a view of the

garden and feeders where it is possible to see

several species of hummingbirds including

Rufous-crested Coquete, Amethyst Woodstar

and Wire-crested Thorntail.  The list of the 

lodge contains 609 species of birds including

Black-capped Tinamou, Blackish Rail, Hoatzin,

Buckley's Forest Falcon, Wattled Guan,

Military Macaw, Blue-headed Macaw, Rufous-

vented Ground-Cuckoo, Koepcke's Hermit, White-bearded Hermit, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Black-eared Fairy, Golden-tailed Saphire, Blue-tailed Emerald, Bluish fronted Jacamar, Fine-barred Piculet, Scarlet-hooded Barbet, Cabani's Spinetail, Bamboo Antshrike, Manu Antbird, Amazonian Antpitta, Rusty-belted Tapaculo, Black-spotted Bare eye, Johanni's

tody-tyrant, White-cheecked Tody tyrant, Ornate Flycatcher, Two banded Warbler, Fire-capped

Manakin Plum-throated Cotinga, Masked-crimson Tanager, Yellow-bellied Dacnis, etc.  There are also possibilities for Mottled Owl, Black-banded Owl, Tawny-bellied Screech-owl, Great, Long-tailed and Common Potoo.  All nights at the comfortable Amazonia Lodge.


Day 09  Amazonia Lodge to Cusco  Early start by bus with short stops for flocks along the way and arriving in Cusco around 3 p.m.  Night at hotel in Cusco.  (This hotel is not included in the cost of the tour)

Peru is a big country with many habitats.  To cover the entire country properly it is necessary to spend several months with a lot of traveling.  This tours are designed for birders with not very much time.  We spend time in the areas that offer the most diversity Peru using hotels and lodges as our base and concentrating on the endemics and specialties of the habitats visited.  This strategy will give you a very representative birding experience of the country. 

 

From the sea level to the highlands and the amazonian lowlands we will  be in the surrounding areas, looking for waterbirds and hummingbirds.  The very scenic drive from Cusco to Manu has many interesting stops making it a constant birding trip.  We'll look for the Sierra Finches and Ground Tyrants.  As we pass through the Inter Andean valleys and Puna on the eastern slope and temperate zone we'll search for Mountain Tanagers. 

Entering the Cloud Forest we'll look for flocks of colorful tanagers and the Cock-of-the-Rock, Quetzals, Owls, Lire Tailed Nightjard and many others.

 

We will be in the beautifull Cusco city and the spectacular Machu Picchu ruins surrounded by a nice cloud forest.   

 

We'll then travel into the pre-mountain rainforest of Manu and search for many lowland birds like Macaws,  with the possibility of 7 species on a lucky trip.  Crakes, Rails, Toucans, Barbets, Antbirds,  Antpittas, and many Others.

Day 1  Lima-Pantanos de Villa- Pucusana-Puerto Viejo.  We start early by car. The habitats will be freshwater marshes, sandy beach, arid lowland scrub, coastal rocky shore and sea coast. Day 2  Lima-Marcapomacocha-Santa Eulalia. 

We start early by bus to the upper part of Lima

over 4,000 meters to an area called Marcapo-

macocha. The habitats here are puna grassland

and bogs, polylepis woodlands, and arid mounta-

in scrub.  From here we will descend to the Santa

Eulalia Valley. The possibilities included:

Day 3  Santa Eulalia Valley-Lima.  We start early to the upper part of the Santa Eulalia Valley. The habitats are arid mountain scrub, riparian tickets, agricultural fields, and streams. The possibilities include Ornate Tinamou, Black-winged Ground-Dove, Scarlet-fronted Parakeet, Mountain Parakeet, (West) Peruvian Pygmy-Owl, White-collared Swift, Andean Swift, Bronze-tailed Comet Black Metaltail, Oasis Hummingbird, Peruvian Sheartail, Purple-collared Woodstar, Black-necked Woodpecker, Andean Tit-Spinetail, Streaked Tit-Spinetail, Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail, Canyon Canastero, Cordilleran Canastero, Pied-crested Tit-Tyrant, Tumbes Pewee, Rufous-chested Tanager, Band-tailed Sierra-Finch, Great Inca-Finch, Rufous-breasted Warbling-Finch, Collared Warbling-Finch, Rusty-bellied Brush-Finch, Golden-bellied Grosbeak, Scrub Blackbird. Overnight Hotel in Lima.


Day 4  Lima-Cusco-Huacarpay.  Early transfer to the airport in Lima and with an hour flight we are in Cusco the capital city of the Inca Empire.

Here a bus will be waiting and we will do a 45 minu-

tes drive to the Hucarpay lakes. The habitats are

an Andean fresh water lake amd marshes, arid

mountain scrub and agricultural lands. The

possibilities included Puna Ibis, Plumbeous Rail,

Andean Lapwing, White-backed Stilt, Speckled,

Puna Teal, Andean Duck, Yellow-billed Pintail,

Andean Gull, Bearded Mountaineer, Sparkling

Violetear, Green-tailed Trainbearer, Giant

Hummingbird, Bare-faced Ground-Dove,

Streak-fronted Thornbird, Rusty-

fronted Canastero, Wren-like Rushbird, Andean

Negrito, Spot-billed and Rufous-naped Ground-Tyrants, Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, Blue-and-yellow Tanager, Greenish Yellow-Finch, Band-tailed Seedeater, Ash-breasted, Mourning, and Peruvian Sierra-Finches, and Yellow-winged Blackbird. Overnight in Cusco. 

     

Day 5  Cusco - Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge.  Early start by car with several stops before the pass to the eastern slope.  The habitats here are arid Andean habitats and Puna. The possibilities include Andean Tinamou, Mountain Caracara, Variable Hawk, Spot-winged Pigeon, Creamy-crested Spinetail, Brown-bellied Swallow, Hooded Siskin, Cinereous Conebill, Golden-billed Saltator, Peruvian Sierra-Finch, Mourning Sierra Finch, Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch. Over the  pass, the habitat becomes elfin forest, humid mountain scrub, second growth scrub, upper mountain evergreen forest, chusquea bamboo finally arriving to our lodge in lower mountain evergreen forest, streams. The possibilities are Tyrian Metaltail, White-collared Jay, Golden-collared Tanager, Moustached Flower-Piercer, and Mountain Cacique, Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Barred Fruiteater, Red-crested Cotinga, Hooded, Scarlet-bellied, and Chestnut-bellied Mountain-Tanagers. We shall spend the next 3 nights at the Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge.


Days  6 & 7  Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge.  Two full days to bird the trails of the lodge and the Manu Road both above and below our lodge.

This represents an altitude range of 7,000 ft

to 2,000 ft. One of the mornings we will visit

the lek of Andean Cock-of-the-Rock where

we can watch males display at  very close

range. Besides this the possibilities include

Highland Motmot, Versicolored Barbet,

Wattled Guan, Golden-headed Quetzal,

Rufous-breasted Antthrush, Slaty

Gnateater, Yungas and Cerulean-capped

Manakins, and Spotted Nightin gale-Thrush.

Booted Racket-tail, Crested Quetzal,

Black-streaked Puffbird, White-crowned Tapaculo, Gray-mantled Wren, Green (Inca) Jay, Golden-eared, Orange-eared and Black-goggled, Golden, Saffron-crowned, Orange-eared and Paradise Tanagers, Orange-bellied Euphonia, Black-eared Hemispingus, Golden-collared Honeycreeper, and Dusky-green Oropendola. One morning we will drive up the road into a different life zone where we will look for stunners like Solitary Eagle, White-throated Hawk, Andean Guan, Speckle-faced (Plum-crowned) Parrot, Blue-banded Toucanet, Yungas Pygmy-Owl, Lyre-tailed Nightjar, Rufous-capped Thornbill, Greater Scythebill, Striped Treehunter, White-capped Dipper, White-eared Solitaire, Glossy-black Thrush, Band-tailed Fruiteater. We will also spend time along the road below the lodge. Here we will watch for Sunbittern, Black-and-chestnut Eagle, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Chestnut-backed Antshrike, Ornate Antwren, Mottle-backed Elaenia, and Swallow Tanager to name a few. All nights Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge.


Day 8  Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge- Amazonia Lodge.  We will take the entire day to travel and bird the route to Amazonia Lodge. The habitats are upper tropical forest, lower mountain evergreen forest, lowland guadua bamboo, secondary forest, agricultural fields and pastures. The possibilities include Black Caracara, Blue-headed Macaw, Lanceolated Monklet, Peruvian Piedtail, Dark-breasted Spinetail, Ornate Flycatcher, Black-backed Tody-Flycatcher, White-winged Tanager, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Plum-throated Cotinga, Two-banded Warbler, Chestnut-bellied Seed Finch, Chestnut-bellied Seedeater, Epaulet Oriole, etc. We arrive to the  river Alto madre de Dios at Atalaya, which we will cross by canoe to Amazonia Lodge.  Night at Amazonia Lodge.


Day 09 -11  Three full days at Amazonia Lodge. 

The lodge is situated at premountain zone, the habitats are lowland terra firme evergreen forest, secondaryforest, lower mountain evergreen,

lowland bamboo, small oxbow lake, Amazonian

river edge forest, large river. To get to these

habitats it is not necessary to take  a boat or

car, just walking short distances. The lodge

has a porch with a view of the garden and feeders,

where is possible to see several species of humming

birds including Rufous-crested Coquete, Amethist

Woodstar, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Black-eared

Fairy, Golden-tailed Saphire, Blue-tailed Emerald.

The list of the lodge is over 600 species of

Day 12  Amazonia Lodge - Manu Wildlife Centre.   7 hours by boat on Madre de Dios River, the possibilities include Fasciated Tiger Heron, Capped Heron, White-necked Heron, Orinoco Goose, Large-billed and Yellow-billed Tern, Pied Lapwing, Collared Plover, Sand-collared  Nighthawk, Ringed, Amazon Kingfishers, Blue-and-yellow, Scarlet, Red-and-green and Red-bellied Macaws, Great-Black Hawk, Bat falcon, Swallow-wing, Bare-necked Fritcrow, White-banded Swallow, etc. Night at the comfortable Manu Wildlife Centre at 300 meters over sea level.


Day 13 - 15  Three full days based at the Manu Wildlife

Centre. We are in the lowlands. The habitats are Lowland terra firme  evergreen forets, lowland bamboo, fllodplain evergreen forest (varzea), Amazonian river-edge forest,

secondary forest, oxbow lake, riverine sand

beackes. One of the mornings we will visit the

Macaw lick, there we will observe Orange-

cheeked, Mealy, Yellow Crowned, Blue-headed

Parrots and Red and  Green Macaw, parakeets,

etc. using a blind. Also in the lodge there is

canopy platform for the observation of the

canopy species, like  Yellow-ridge and Cuviers

Toucans, Guilded Barbet, Bare-necked Fritcrow,

Sirystes Flycatcher, Paradise Tanager,

Opal-crowned, Opal-rumped, Green and

Gold Tanagers etc .  We will visit the Oxbow

lake for  Wattled Jacana, Green and Rufous Kingfisher, Rufescent Tiger Heron, Anhinga, Sungrebe, Lesser Kiskadee, Black capped Donacobious, Red capped Cardinal, etc. The rest of the time birding in the sistem trails of the lodge, which include several habitats like, Varzea, Terra Firme, Bamboo etc. The possibilities include. Bartlett's Tinamou, Razor-billed Currasow, Pale-wing Trumpeter, Pavonine Quetzal, Chesnut Jacamar, Collared Puffbird. Rufous-breasted Piculet, Rufous headed Woodpecker, Long-billed Woodcreeper, Rufous -fronted Antthrush, Flammmulated Bammboo Tyrant, Spangled Cotinga, White-browed Purpletuft Musician Wren, Pale-eyed Blackbird, etc. The possibilities for owling are Amazonian Pygmy Owl, Crested owl, Spectacled Owl, Ocellated Poorwill. All nights Manu Wildlife Centre.


Day 16  Manu wildlife Centre - Cusco.  Early start for the airstrip at Boca Manu (2.5 hours upriver). On the way we will see the last views of Macaws, Parrots, Capped Heron, etc. The fly over the Andes to Cusco takes 45 minutes. From the airport to Urubamba by bus. Birding in the late afternoon on the grounds can produce White-bellied Hummingbird, Green-tailed Trainbearer, White-browed Chat-Tyrant, and Black-backed Grosbeak.  Night at Hotel in Urubamba.


Day 17  Full day excursion to the Abra Malaga area.  The pass is over 4200 meters and we will go down to the Canchayoc area and in the way back we will walk to the polilepys forest. The habitats are humid and semi arid and some scrub, second growth scrub, agricultural fields, stream, semiarid mountain scrub, puna grasslands, bogs and polilepys woodlands. The possibilities include White- tufted Sumbeam, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Coppery-naped Puffleg,  Puna Thistletail, Marcapata Spinetail, Creamy-crested Spinetail, Chesnut-breasted Mountain-finch, Tufted Tit-tyrant, Stripe-headed Antpitta; Puna, Ochre-Naped, White-browed, Plain-capped Ground Tyrants, Inca Wren, etc. In the polylepis forest the possibilities are, Royal Cinclodes, Lined fronted Canastero, White browed Tit-spinetail, Puna Tapaculo, Ash breasted Tit-Tyrant, Giant Conebill, the Andean Condor is possible too. Night at Hotel in Urubamba.


Day 18  Urubamba-Machupicchu.  Early morning transfer by bus from hotel in Urubamba to the train station in Ollantaytambo, from Ollantaytambo we take a train for 1.5 hours

to the town of Aguas Calientes.  We will then take

the bus to the magic Inca city of Machupicchu.

After the guided visit of the ruins and the lunch

we start the birding in the way down to Aguas

Calientes. The habitats are humid mountain

scrub, second growth mountain, mountain

evergreen forest, river, streams. The

possibilities include the endemic,

Green-and- White, Hunmingbird,

Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Ocellated Piculet,

Streak Xenops, Variable Antshrike, White-

winged Black-Tyrant, Sclater's Tyrannulet,

Ashy-headed Tyrannulet, Silver-backed  Tanager, Golden Naped Tanager,  Tricolored brush Finch, the endemic Inca Wren, Pale-legged Warbler, Russet-crowned Warbler. In the river Torrent Duck, White-capped Dipper, Torrent Tyrannulet, etc. We then backtrack by train upriver this time to Ollaytotambo. Then transfer by bus to Cusco.  Overnight in Cusco.


Day 19  We will take a morning flight from Cusco back to Lima.  There we will meet a bus and go to the area call Lomas de Lachay what is a mist oasis. The habitits are arid lowland scrub and the unique vegetation tipe call lomas vegetation. The possibilities here are Tawny-throated Dotterel, Least Seedsnipe, Gray-capped Cuckoo, Grayish, Coastal and thick-billed Miners, Cactus Canastero, Dark-faced Ground-Tyrant, Collared Warbling Finch, Dull-colored Grassquit, Grassland and Raymondis Yellow finches, etc. Transfer to the hotel until the time for the transfer to the airport for the international fly.

Day 2  Lima-Marcapomacocha-Santa Eulalia.  We start early by bus to the upper part of Lima over 4,000 meters to an area called Marcapomacocha. The habitats here are puna grassland and bogs, polylepis woodlands, and arid mountain scrub.  From here we will descend to the Santa Eulalia Valley. The possibilities included: Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe, Gray-breasted Seedsnipe, Black-breasted Hillstar, Olivaceous Thornbill, Dark-winged Miner, White-bellied Cinclodes, Junín Canastero, Plain-breasted Earthcreeper, Striated Earthcreeper, White-cheeked Cotinga, Cinereous Ground-Tyrant, White-fronted Ground-Tyrant, Black-fronted Ground-Tyrant, Correndera Pipit, Giant Conebill, Black Siskin, Overnight in Hotel in Santa Eulalia or Chosica.


Day 3  Santa Eulalia Valley-Lima.  We start early to the upper part of the Santa Eulalia Valley. The habitats are arid mountain scrub, riparian tickets, agricultural fields, and streams. The possibilities include Ornate Tinamou, Black-winged Ground-Dove, Scarlet-fronted Parakeet, Mountain Parakeet, (West) Peruvian Pygmy-Owl, White-collared Swift, Andean Swift, Bronze-tailed Comet Black Metaltail, Oasis Hummingbird, Peruvian Sheartail, Purple-collared Woodstar, Black-necked Woodpecker, Andean Tit-Spinetail, Streaked Tit-Spinetail, Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail, Canyon Canastero, Cordilleran Canastero, Pied-crested Tit-Tyrant, Tumbes Pewee, Rufous-chested Tanager, Band-tailed Sierra-Finch, Great Inca-Finch, Rufous-breasted Warbling-Finch, Collared Warbling-Finch, Rusty-bellied Brush-Finch, Golden-bellied Grosbeak, Scrub Blackbird. Day 4  Lima-Cusco-Huacarpay.  Early transfer to the airport in Lima and with an hour flight we are in Cusco the capital city of the Inca

Empire. Here a bus will be waiting and we

will do a 45 minutes drive to the Hucarpay

lakes. The habitats are an Andean

freshwater lake amd marshes, arid

mountain scrub and agricultural lands. The

possibilities included Puna Ibis, Plumbeous

Rail, Andean Lapwing, White-backed Stilt,

Speckled, Puna Teal, Andean Duck, Yellow-

billed Pintail, Andean Gull, Bearded

Mountaineer, Sparkling Violetear, Green-

tailed Trainbearer, Giant Hummingbird,

Bare-faced Ground-Dove, Streak-fronted

Thornbird, Rusty-fronted Canastero,

Wren-like Rushbird, Andean Negrito,

Spot-billed and Rufous-naped Ground-Tyrants, Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, Blue-and-yellow

Tanager, Greenish Yellow-Finch, Band-tailed Seedeater, Ash-breasted, Mourning, and Peruvian Sierra-Finches, and Yellow-winged Blackbird. Overnight in Cusco. 

     

Day 5  Cusco - Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge.  Early start by car with several stops before the pass to the eastern slope.  The habitats here are arid Andean habitats and Puna. The possibilities include Andean Tinamou, Mountain Caracara, Variable Hawk, Spot-winged Pigeon, Creamy-crested Spinetail, Brown-bellied Swallow, Hooded Siskin, Cinereous Conebill, Golden-billed Saltator, Peruvian Sierra-Finch, Mourning Sierra Finch, Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch. Over the  pass, the habitat becomes elfin forest, humid mountain scrub, second growth scrub, upper mountain evergreen forest, chusquea bamboo finally arriving to our lodge in lower mountain evergreen forest, streams. The possibilities are Tyrian Metaltail, White-collared Jay, Golden-collared Tanager, Moustached Flower-Piercer, and Mountain Cacique, Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Barred Fruiteater, Red-crested Cotinga, Hooded, Scarlet-bellied, and Chestnut-bellied Mountain-Tanagers. We shall spend the next 3 nights at the Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge.


Days  6 & 7  Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge.  Two full days to bird the trails of the lodge and the Manu Road both above and below our lodge. This represents an altitude range of 7,000 ft to 2,000 ft. One of the mornings we will visit the

lek of Andean Cock-of-the-Rock where we

can watch males display at very close range.

Besides this the possibilities include

Highland Motmot, Versicolored Barbet, Wattled

Guan, Golden-headed Quetzal, Rufous-breasted

Antthrush, Slaty Gnateater, Yungas and Cerulean

-capped Manakins, and Spotted Nightingale-

Thrush.

Gray-mantled Wren, Green (Inca) Jay, Golden-

eared, Orange-eared and Black-goggled, Golden,

Saffron-crowned, Orange-eared and Paradise Tanagers, Orange-bellied Euphonia, Black-eared Hemispingus, Golden-collared Honeycreeper, and Dusky-green Oropendola. One morning we will drive up the road into a different life zone where we will look for stunners like Solitary Eagle, White-throated Hawk, Andean Guan, Speckle-faced (Plum-crowned) Parrot, Blue-banded Toucanet, Yungas Pygmy-Owl, Lyre-tailed Nightjar, Rufous-capped Thornbill, Greater Scythebill, Striped Treehunter, White-capped Dipper, White-eared Solitaire, Glossy-black Thrush, Band-tailed Fruiteater. We will also spend time along the road below the lodge. Here we will watch for Sunbittern, Black-and-chestnut Eagle, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Chestnut-backed Antshrike, Ornate Antwren, Mottle-backed Elaenia, and Swallow Tanager to name a few. All nights Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge.


Day 8  Cock-of-the Rock Lodge- Amazonia Lodge.  We will take the entire day to travel and bird the route to Amazonia Lodge. The habitats are upper tropical forest, lower mountain evergreen forest, lowland guadua bamboo, secondary forest, agricultural fields and pastures. The possibilities include Black Caracara, Blue-headed Macaw, Lanceolated Monklet, Peruvian Piedtail, Dark-breasted Spinetail, Ornate Flycatcher, Black-backed Tody-Flycatcher, White-winged Tanager, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Plum-throated Cotinga, Two-banded Warbler, Chestnut-bellied Seed Finch, Chestnut-bellied Seedeater, Epaulet Oriole, etc. We arrive to the  river Alto madre de Dios at Atalaya, which we will cross by canoe to Amazonia Lodge.  Night at Amazonia Lodge


Day 09 -11  Three full days at Amazonia Lodge.  The lodge is situated at premountain zone, the habitats are lowland terra firme evergreen forest, secondary forest, lower mountain evergreen, lowland bamboo, small oxbow lake, Amazonian river edge forest, large river. To get to these habitats it is not necessary to take

a boat or car, just walking short distances.
